Andrew “Drew” Uhl is a Certified Professional Pet Dog Trainer, Police K9 Trainer, and Instructor with over 16 years of dog training experience.
Drew was born and raised in Michigan where he grew up around family dogs. After graduating from Central Michigan University he pursued a career in business during which time he adopted his first love Tilly, a Rhodesian Ridgeback and Pitbull mix. After a few amazing years with Tilly, Drew decided to leave the business world and go into dog training in hopes of helping others experience the joys of dog ownership that he had. Drew started his dog training journey by attending Tarheel Canine’s Professional Trainer School where he became certified in Pet Dog Obedience and Police K9 training, instructing, and handling. Shortly after graduation Drew partnered up and opened a dog training company in North Carolina.
After 4 successful years of training dogs in North Carolina, Drew followed his wife to Memphis and opened Dog Obedience College to bring the joy of well-trained dogs to the Memphis area as well.
Currently Drew has three dogs sharing his life, all of them have been adopted from the Fayette County Animal Rescue (FCAR): the oldest is a Pit Bull named Tommy, then Hofer a Pit Bull mix, and the youngest Bear a shepherd mix.
Tommy, a Pit Bull, that had pretty rough life before being saved by the great people at the Fayette County Animal Rescue. After being saved and nursed back to health, Tommy’s loving personality really started to show, almost to a fault. He desperately wanted to be near people and show his love for them, however this usually came in the form of jumping on and running over the kennel staff. As Tommy got healthier and bigger/stronger the staff was having a hard time dealing with all his affection, that’s when they contacted Drew for help. Tommy was placed in the Advanced Off Leash program where he learned to focus all that loving energy and use it to earn affection through good manners. Upon graduation Drew decided to foster Tommy in order to keep his obedience skills sharp for any potential adopter.
Well, as time went on, Tommy’s greatest skill of affection won over Drew and his family and they decided to officially adopt him. Over the course of the next 8 years Tommy has proven time and time again what a great companion he can be. Tommy has taken on many roles through the years including helping to train student dogs, providing a sense of security by being a visual deterrent, and most importantly he’s been a great big “brother” to Drew’s son.
Drew’s other two dogs, Hofer and Bear, have been with the family since 2021 and 2022 respectively. Hofer, the Pit Bull mix originally arrived at FCAR suffering from Parvo. According to the rescue, even though he was battling for his life through the long treatment process he never lost his happy go lucky attitude. Shortly after finishing his treatment and getting back to health, Drew and his family went out to the rescue to meet him and a few other dogs. But after experiencing Hofer’s whole body tail wag wiggles, they fell in love and adopted him on the spot.
Since being part of the family Hofer has helped with dog students by providing good distractions, he’s helped keep Tommy young with playtime, and he’s a great running partner for Drew’s wife.
The youngest dog Bear, according to the DNA test is a Shepherd and “Super Mutt” mix, has brought nothing but smiles to Drew’s family since day one. When he saw that FCAR had a big fluffy puppy dropped off, Drew knew they had to meet him. After a short introduction the family was sold on this energetic big personality puppy and adopted him.
Drew’s son claims Bear as his own. The two have a strong bond and are often seen playing or relaxing next to each other. When Drew’s son is at school however, Bear goes to work helping out with the dogs in training.
